Water Conservation

During holiday weekends, the Alligator Point Water Resources District urges you to practice water conservation during this stressful time for the water system.  As expected, peak water system demands occur during the three summer holidays— Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.  Because of your help, the system has always been able to meet these peak demands through successful water conservation efforts.

During holiday weekends, please be aware of the water that you use.  This is especially important for outside usage for irrigation of lawns and washing cars.  We understand the need to wash down boats after a day in salt water.  Please shut off water flow as soon as possible during clean up.  Thanks for your attention to water conservation.

10 Water Saving Facts
  1. Check for leaks in all inside sinks and outside faucets.  Studies have shown that leaks account for as much as 5% of all indoor water use.
  2. Replace your old toilet which probably uses 5-7 gallons per flush (largest water user in homes); if your home was built before 1992 and the toilet has never been replaced, then you do not have a water-efficient, 1.6 gallons per flush toilet. Studies have shown that toilet leaks account for as much as 20% of all indoor water use.
  3. Replace old washing machines (2nd largest water user in homes).  If your washing machine is not Energy Star™ rated, then you are wasting anywhere from 35-50% more water and 50% more energy than the newer models. This change alone can save you money on your water and energy bills per month.
  4. Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full.  You can save over 1,000 gallons per month.
  5. Take a shower instead of a bath.  Taking a bath typically uses 40 gallons of water compared to a shower which uses about 20 gallons of water.
  6. Try to keep showers to under 5 minutes for more water conservation. You can save 1,000 gallons per month.
  7. Before lathering up, install a low-flow showerhead which controls the amount of water flow and which is quite inexpensive and more luxurious.  This can save you over 500 gallons per week.
  8. When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing.
  9. When brushing your teeth or shaving, don’t let the water run.
  10. When washing or rinsing your car/boat outside using an outside water hose, be sure to attach a nozzle that controls the flow of water.
